These cards were issued in Northern California by the Remar Baking Co. from 1945-1950. The cards picture only players from the Pacific Coast League Oakland Oaks. Individual player Remar Bread cards were made in 1946, 1947, 1949, and 1950, all are B&W and measure 2" by 3" with the players name, bio, and an ad for Remar Bread on the backs. Each year is slightly different in design. The 1946 set has a card number on front with an ad on back printed in red and blue, it is complete at 23 different cards (5 are unnumbered). The 1947 set in numbered on front with an ad on back printed in blue, it is complete at 25 different cards. The 1949 set is unnumbered and has the radio ad banner and bread loaf touching in the back ad, it is complete at 32 different cards. The 1950 set is unnumbered and has a gap between the radio ad banner and the bread loaf in the back ad, it is complete at 27 different cards. In 1945 and 1948 Remar only made a larger postcard size B&W team picture card (with ad and team stats on back), and these are extremely rare with only 2 examples from each year known.
The 1947 and 1948 Smith's Clothiers Oakland Oaks cards are similar to the Remar cards in design, but the back shows an ad for Smith's. They are a bit scarcer than the Remar cards. Both Smith's sets are complete at 25 different cards. |
